Northern Lights Library Project – Lion Witherite

Mike:
You might remember that I worked with a Lion in Anchorage, Alaska this year on a book project. His name is Walt Hayes of the Mt.McKinley Lions Club in Anchorage, and he is also an advisor to the Board Of Directors of P.E.T. International in Columbia, Mo.
A Bethel Lions Club Lion from Alaska, by the name of Ross Boring found that 2000 pounds of new Scholastic books, teacher lesson plans, workbooks for grades 1 through 6 were going to a landfill. He rescued this material and the shipment came to Texas as Bryan Brazos Valley P.E.T. was planning to ship this material to Africa to be distributed by Lions along with a shipment of our P.E.T.s. The Nigeria Lions plan fell through, so I had the shipment sent to California(San Diego) to be placed on a Navy Project Handclasp ship to go to Tongo in the South Pacific.
Another Lion in the Mt. McKinley Lions Club, Kato Ha’unga ,who is from Tongo, had been collecting books as the island’s library had been destroyed a couple of years ago from a tsunami. You can see from the attachment that two libraries are being established to support the folks of Yonga.
I worked on behalf of our Lions Club to try to help my Lion friend Walt Hayes, and also with the help of Past International Director Joe Al Picone, we were successful in getting this elementary school material to an English speaking country to help small children.
I thought you might want to share this mission endeavor with our club members since it was College Station Noon Lions Club and other Lions that made this mission possible.
